my plan for animation in the final

Since I am having so much trouble with the actors I have decided to animate half of the movie. since animating is a time consuming task I have looked for shows with animating styles that are simple. In the show tom goes to mayor, the makers simply took photos of actors and of backgrounds and used a filter in photoshop to make it seem as though the people had been drawn. from there I presume that they just put them together and edited them with the sound in after effects. the show has very limited animation but I think it works. I plan on drawing the characters in black ink and leaving them black and white with some shading to emulate the effect in the show.

the following links demonstrate the animating style in tom goes to mayor:

Reaction paper

Just thought i should post it up here:

---
I had gone to see the “shorts: cold feet”, Which I thought contained a lot of great shorts, my favorites being “Irish Twins”, “The Tournament” and “Sikumi”. at the same time however I feel like the short movies were unorganized in the sense that it seemed as though the people that made the program tried to unify these movies with a theme but failed in doing so. Otherwise the movies were great though. The two things that I noticed about all the moves is that they either had excellent story telling or pacing that made the story better than it actually was. The two best examples of this, in my opinion were “the tournament” and “Irish twins” In both movies the there was a specific plot point that became a twist in the way the continuity of the story was portrayed, because of this it was as if the story is centered on that twist. In other words its almost as though the story was written for the sole purpose of leading up the twist. In a sense it is what created the pacing of the story, because the pacing in both movies would speed up or slow down depending on whether or not they were talking about that related to the twist. In Irish twins Seamus tries to get his brother to go with him to Ireland to scatter his father’s ashes but his brother refuses because he didn’t like his father. Seamus tries to convince him by telling him things about their father that might make him see his father differently. In that movie the pacing always picks up when they are talking about going to Ireland and slows down slightly when they are talking about their father. This makes sense because later in the story we find that Seamus was being perused by his bully from high school, whom he had shot in the arm a few hours before, this is what inevitably led up to the teist at the end when Seamus’ brother kills Seamus’ bully. I think all of the movies this sort of great story telling and pacing, even though it worked better in some more than the others.

Production schedule (updated 4/22/08)

4-18-08
On Sunday or Monday (depending on the day that the actor is available) I will record the voice of the actor, for the narration. I will not be able to shoot the footage I intended to shoot because I made a mistake in the reservation and rented out a digital camera instead of a dv camera. This, however, doesn't slow down the process very much because I plan on using photos instead of footage for certain shots in the beginning, like when he is comparing the good and bad about the Bronx. Before I obtain the sound however I will have finished the the animations so that I can tell exactly how long I want the sound to be. The actual shooting will be done from Thursday-Monday in that time range. The reason why I give such a general range of time is because the actors will be available at different days and i plan to shot in at least 2 parts or more. One day shoot the scenes with Norman in his room on the computer and the rest of the days shoot the scenes that come in while he is describing them.

4-22-08
I have casted 3 friends to act out the parts of the characters. Damion Blaire, Adriana Warner and myself as Norman, Mike and Chris. me and Damion will be playing mike and Chris and Adriana will be Norman. I have rented a camera for use on Thursday I will shoot as much as I possibly can on that day. Also I have found someone who might just be able to help me out with editing if i can finish the shooting on Thursday, which is something I'm confident I can do so there will be a 90% chance of him being able to help me edit. If all this goes according to plan I can start editing as early as Sunday-Monday and just continue to edit to completion from then on. I know exactly what I want to do in editing so I don't think it will take too long. I think that I can have the movie done with just enough time to be able to make a decent title sequence, without having to worry too much about the movie in terms of completing it.

my psa

my midterm video is up this is the url:
My PSA

this is the script i used for the commercial:

Over the past few years we’ve made a lot of advancements that were only made possible because of the internet. We can now share information faster, find and buy practically anything online, sell your companies products like putting your music up online and selling it to gain revenue much faster if you’re a musician for one. and sometimes you can build enough recognition online that can be the start of something much greater. It has revolutionized the way we view the world

There’s so many ways I can use the internet to make my life easier.

I can send a mail to my family overseas, for free!

I can talk to my friends from wherever they are.

I can sell my music online so it can reach more people faster and increase my sales.

I can buy things that I wouldn’t be able to find in any store offline.

I can show off my work via writing, pictures or video and gain enough popularity that will hopefully catapult me towards the next level.

I can listen to the latest music, instantly.

{fades out but not completely the voice can still be heard in the background. As the voice continues in the background a new one talks over it}:

All these things are made possible by the internet, but they aren’t the only uses for it, there are so many more, some more important than the next. but now Comcast and AT&T are monopolizing the internet by limiting the speed of sites that aren’t affiliated with them and charging sites extra just to maintain a regular speed. If they aren’t stopped the freedom we now enjoy on the internet will seize to exist.

But there is a solution, By introducing the “freedom preservation act” to your congressman which helps enforce network neutrality we can stop the monopolization of the internet. Net neutrality is simply an internet law that states that the internet should always stay neutral to all parties that use it and that no one should be charged extra to get faster speed to the sites that they what to access. So please, visit www.savetheinternet.com to find out how to introduce the bill to your congressman and to get more information on Net neutrality and on Comcast and AT&T’s plans.

script of second commercial.

The assets for this commercial will be very minimal. it will just be scenery ( live action or not).

this is the script:

the first scene is a mid shot of a man walking about, on his way to see a friend. ah he passes by the bus stop he spots someone he knows sitting on a bench. he walks over to him and greets him.

mid close up shot. the camera looks down for an instant at the man who was sitting. the camera follows him a as he gets up and hugs the guy who was previously walking. he then kissing him on the lips. as it turns out they're lovers.

"hey i'm on my way to a friends house, you want to come with me?" said the man who was previously walking. the other responds, "sorry Im on my way to work...". as he says that the bus arrives.

a close up shot of the mans face.
"oh ok welll i'll see you, later." the "walking man" bids his boyfriend farewell with an "i love you" and tries to kiss him but stops midway.

close up of the other man whom is now a woman.
she's walking backwards towards the bus waving at him saying "i love you too"

close up of the man the camera zooms in slowly eventually making an extreme close up shot.
the scene depicts the man shocked and confused.

the narrator begins to talking when the last shot starts "sometimes censorship can change our lives in unwanted ways."
the words "stop too much censorship" appear on the screen. i think that i would be a good idea to link to a website that contain more information on what it is and how they can stop it.

script subject to change.

script of first commercial.

all of the assets (with the exception of the spectators) are depicted in the picture.

the script to this commercial is as follows:

Fade in to the scene.
the camera looks down at an angle behind the man on the building, it can see the streets some what clearly it zooms in creating an over the shoulder shot. the man on the building, whom is dressed very sharply like a business man, observes the city below for a few seconds, then pulls out the TV remote and a way that will show it off to camera.
a light somewhat sad tune begins to play. it fades in slowly but always stays at a relatively low volume.
everything seems well down below until he notices that there is a man smoking a cigarette as he is driving his car (or truck), the man pushes a button on his remote and the driver suddenly disappears. the automobile suddenly loses control and causing a accident. relatively few property is damaged but someone is killed. spectators begin to gather but the man pushes the same button on his remote and the wreck dissapears. the spectators stop gathering as though nothing happened to begin with.

the camera slowly pans to look at the mans satisfied face. as it does, the narrator begins talking.

"censorship can sometimes be a good thing. But too much of it can be dangerous. help us stoptoo much censonrship."
the words "stop too much censorship" appear on the screen. now i think that i would be a good idea to link to a website that contain more information on what it is and how they can stop it.

script is subject to change.

group project story boards

the reason why the storyboards dont have any text is because the song is going to be playing throughout the whole movie. these are the lyrics to the song:

Wanna tell you a story,
about the house-rent blues
I come home one Friday,
had to tell the landlady I'd done lost my job
She said that don't comfort me,
long as I get my money next Friday
Now next Friday come I didn't get the rent,
and out the door I went

So I goes to the landlady,
I said, "You let me slide?"
I'll have the rent for you tomorrow.
the next day I don't know
So said let me slide it on you know people,
I notice when I come home in the evening
She ain't got nothing nice to say to me,
but for five year she was so nice
Loh' she was lovy-dovy,
I come home one particular evening
The landlady said, "You got the rent money yet?",
I said, "No, can't find no job"
Therefore I ain't got no money to pay the rent
She said "I don't believe you're tryin' to find no job"
Said "I seen you today you was standin' on a corner,
leaning up against a post"
I said "But I'm tired, I've been walkin' all day"
She said "That don't confront me,
long as I get my money next Friday"
Now next Friday come I didn't have the rent,
and out the door I went

So I go down the streets,
down to my good friend's house
I said "Look man I'm outdoors you know,
can I stay with you maybe a couple days?"
He said "Uh, Let me go and ask my wife"
He come out of the house,
I could see in his face
I know that was no
He said "I don't know man, ah she kinda funny, you know"
I said "I know, everybody funny, now you funny too"
So I go back home
I tell the landlady I got a job, I'm gonna pay the rent
She said "Yeah?" I said "Oh yeah"
And then she was so nice,
loh' she was lovy-dovy
So I go in my room, pack up my things and I go,
I slip on out the back door and down the streets I go
She a-hollerin' about the front rent, she'll be lucky to get any back rent,
she ain't gonna get none of it
So I stop in the local bar you know people,
I go to the bar, I ring my coat, I call the bartender
Said "Look man, come down here", he got down there
So what you want?

One bourbon, one scotch, one beer
Well I ain't seen my baby since I don't know when,
I've been drinking bourbon, whiskey, scotch and gin
Gonna get high man I'm gonna get loose,
need me a triple shot of that juice
Gonna get drunk don't you have no fear
I want one bourbon, one scotch and one beer
One bourbon, one scotch, one beer

But I'm sitting now at the bar,
I'm getting drunk, I'm feelin' mellow
I'm drinkin' bourbon, I'm drinkin' scotch, I'm drinkin' beer
Looked down the bar, here come the bartender
I said "Look man, come down here"
So what you want?

One bourbon, one scotch, one beer
No I ain't seen my baby since the night before last,
gotta get a drink man I'm gonna get gassed
Gonna get high man I ain't had enough,
need me a triple shot of that stuff
Gonna get drunk won't you listen right here,
I want one bourbon, one shot and one beer
One bourbon, one scotch, one beer

Now by this time I'm plenty high,
you know when your mouth a-getting dry you're plenty high
Looked down the bar I say to my bartender
I said "Look man, come down here", he got down there
So what you want this time?
I said "Look man, a-what time is it?"
He said "The clock on the wall say three o'clock
Last call for alcohol, so what you need?"

One bourbon, one scotch, one beer
No I ain't seen my baby since a nigh' and a week,
gotta get drunk man so I can't even speak
Gonna get high man listen to me,
one drink ain't enough Jack you better make it three
I wanna get drunk I'm gonna make it real clear,
I want one bourbon, one scotch and one beer
One bourbon, one scotch, one beer

PSA propssal

The social issue my public service announcement will be talking about is censorship. It is my firm belief that some censorship is ok for many different reasons. However, i think that censorship sometimes goes too far and causes the censoring of vital information in the process, things that may seem inappropriate or obscene in retrospect but are in fact critical in doing things like raising awareness about a deadly disease or informing the world of issues that can be far more grave and devastating. I'm not just talking about small things like "bleeping" bad words on TV or violent video games but the kind of censorship that can ultimately end people's careers or keep us ignorant of a fact that could cause harm to our society or the world if is not revealed to us in detail.

This PSA is meant for everyone's eyes but i would consider my target audience to be anyone who is currently unaware of too much censorship and anyone who man make fruitful attempts at solving this issue. people like congressmen, for example. at the same time though, i would want the rest of the population to see my psa because even if they may not be able to make a "fruitful effort" there is still a chance that they will agree with me and my message and in doing so will promote my commercials message through word of my mouth which will in theory, convince others in believing the same thing, even those who might have previously believed the opposite of what my commercial promotes.

so far most of my research currently comes from two sites which i have deemed reliable source of information regarding censorship. the first is ( http://www.azete.com/view/18288 ) although i admit i dont agree with certain points the anonymous author made, because i feel that s/he described some of the necessary uses of censorship as negative things, but s/he makes good points about too much censorship. In on of these well made points s/he talks about a book Stevie wonder wrote about about aids prevention but was pulled off store shelves, deemed too explicit. The second is ( http://www.slate.com/id/2102499/ ) an article
by Linda Callanan on slate magazines official website. In her article, Linda describes how censorship can be dangerous in certain times. The article was written in 2004 when the terror alert was on yellow but she says that because of censorship "We know we're supposed to be on guard, but against what, we're not sure because more specific information is often withheld."

my two ideas for commercials are as follows:

first the first one will be a man in a business suit with a magic TV remote which he uses to wipe things he feels should be censored, form existence. however in doing so he creates a far greater problem which he simply censors. the ast scene is of the man pushing the button and censoring his mistake.

the second idea will depict a gay couple. it would start with a man sitting idly by in a public place. then it is reveal he was waiting for his partner all long. his partner tells him that he wont be able to go where they originally planned to because of some urgent business that came up. understanding he bids his lover farewell with an "i love you" and just as he is about to kiss him he stops midway only to notice that there was a woman where his lover was just standing. the woman smiles and replies "i love you too." the last scene is a close of of the man's shocked and confused face.

both of these commercials will be followed by a narrator stating a fact about censorship that is relevant to the commercials story.

if i am allowed to i would like to make the commecials animated. i think that my style of drawing, which depicts "cute" characters, will greatly reinforce the impact of the commercials because of the contradiction between the cute characters between serious theme that is presented to the viewer. however if i am not allowed to make them animated (if it HAS to be live action) i would try to make it stand out by utilizing camera angles that make the situations seem as though it isnt as impacting as it actually is.

the first commercial will be only one shot but it will be a shot that reveals everything at once. idealy the man will on top of a building using his remote so the shot will be and over the shoulder shot of him looking down revealing every part of the busy city below.

the second commercial will use about 6 diferent shots at maximum, however the shots will be as zoomed in as possible. the most zoomed in would be a close up shot and the least zoomed in will be a mid shot. the shot will be, the man sitting on a bench, the lover coming towards him greeting him from a distance the man can be seen on the side of the shot, a shot of them hugging then the man who just arrived explaining he cant stay, a shot of the man about to kiss the guy, a shot of the woman, and finally a shot of the camera slowly zooming in to the mans shocked face.

two more posts will follow including the scripts and sketches of each commercial.

1st hw favorite movie/ good book for movie

"What is you favorite movie?"

One of my favorite movies is Bandits. The movie is about two long time criminals that develop a new, seemingly flawless, way to rob banks. This involved finding out who owned the next bank that they planning on stealing from, then going to the persons house, and letting them now that they they were going to sleepover for a day then rob the bank the next day, this way it would look as though the bank owner was willingly handing them money, hence not looking suspicious. Because of this the two main characters became know to the public as the "sleepover bandits"

Throughout the movie the Two main characters, Joe and Terry, tell the story of how their new bank robbing method made them famous criminals on a tv show that is similar to shows like "American's most wanted". This makes things interesting because this makes it obvious to the viewer that Joe and Terry have survived everything they've been through, but sometimes it seems so utterly impossible that they would survive the situations. The movie starts when Joe and Terry escape from jail and hideout for a while. They eventually come up with their bank robbing scheme in order to try and finance a new more legitimate life. However they are joined by a housewife named Kate when she accidentally hits Terry with her car. She instantly becomes fascinated with them from then on. They are also joined by a stunt man who was a friend of Joe and Terry's from before they when to jail (i forgot this characters name). From here on out they start robbing the banks with the same routine every time. joe handles all the aggressive parts of the plan, terry the more intellectual and the stunt man (and sometimes kate) is the getaway car who drivers them away from the bank after the owner hands them the money they need. But somewhere along the line they stop agreeing with each other and start constantly fighting and arguing until it gets to the point when it seems as though they might stop working together to kill each other.

I think the theme of this movie if any is that a good plan need perseverance. This is just because although they are on the wrong site of the law the reason why everything works so well for them is because they stay true to what they say even when it might seem as though times are rough for them. I think they pace is the same throughout most of the movie and starts to speed up at the end, which is interesting because there are sometimes when it seems as though the pace would speed up to show the pressure the main characters are dealing with but instead it stays the same as though the situation were no big deal at all.

"What have you ever read that you think would translate into a good film?"

10 things to do before i die by Daniel Ehrenhaft is a story that i think is worthy of being a great comedy movie. The main characters are Ted Burger his friend Mark, Marks girlfriend and Rachel (Ted's "supposed" girlfriend). The story starts when Ted, Mark and his girlfriend are hanging out at their favorite fast food place and find out that one of the fry cooks went crazy after being fired and secretly dumped blowfish poison on the last batch of fries that he made. However only Ted was poisoned out of the three because of the simple fact that Ted had gone to eat alone when that specific batch of fires were served to him. To see if he really was poisoned he googles blowfish poison, avoiding going to the doctor because he feared the doctor might not believe him just like Rachel didn't when he told her. He finds out that he has two of out three of the major symptoms of blowfish poison which include, but aren't limited to, vertigo and nausea. the site also tells him he only has a few days to live (about 2 if i remember correctly). Since Mark and his girlfriend are the only ones that believe him they tell him to at the very least "go out with a bang" and do the things he's always wanted to do. Ted decides to to follow their idea and come out with a list of 10 things to do before he dies. The major twist in the story is that at the end Ted finally passes out, but ends up waking up in the hospital where the doctor tells him that he wasn't poisoned to begin with but rather that he was having a nervous breakdown from being in so many stressful situations.

I think if I were to make it into a film I would make it almost like the book but making certain scenes more dramatic (like all the scenes when Ted experiences vertigo for example). I picture this being a short movie of at least 90 minutes but I would want it to be very fast paced. The only times that should be slow paced are the beginning before Ted finds out he's been poisoned and the end when the doctor tells him that he was having a nervous breakdown all along. The film will be dark mostly since a lot of the story takes place at night and I feel that it would be appropriate to add blurring effects in the times of dire situations. Not only that but the usage of effects and and camera angles sound reflect Ted's emotions at the time, especially since most of the action in the story is driven by either Ted's emotions or his reaction on other people's actions. For example the movie will mostly be fast paced but if the mood changes abruptly so should the pace. Also the scenes when Ted experiences vertigo should mostly be first person (perpetual) view. My idea is that depending on what he's thinking and experiencing at the time of the vertigo should be used as reference to strategically toggle between first persons and third person camera views. The sound should be as realistic as possible but should be slightly slowed when blurring effects are applied. The speed of the sounds would be determined by the amount of blurring used. In other words the sound should only be as slow as the screen is blurry. Also the setting would be the same as the book which if i remember correctly is upper Manhattan. The rest of the Burroughs of New York should be depicted in the movie depending on Ted's opinion of them.
